ATO CONFIRMS 50% INVESTMENT ALLOWANCE FOR ART WORKS

Are you aware that you might be eligible for an investment allowance of up to 50% for the purchase of art by your business?

Kevin Hill’s “TOP TEN” Australian Artists has received advice from Lowensteins Arts Management (Certified Practicing Accountants) that the ATO has confirming to them, that businesses with a turnover under $2 million are eligible to receive an investment allowance of up to 50% on the purchase of artworks purchased for at least $1,000. Also, for businesses with a turnover of more than $2 million turnover an investment allowance of 10% on the purchase of artworks purchased for at least $10,000. This investment allowance is available up to 31st December 2009.

There are a small number of guidelines to enable artworks to be claimed under the new allowance. Among the guidelines accepted by the ATO to qualify for the allowance are:

• The allowance only applies to NEW artworks created by professional artists registered with an ABN or a recognized overseas artist.

• Artworks are used in Australia primarily for business purposes (an artwork would not qualify if its exposure was limited to only its owner).

• Artworks must be tangible, therefore excluding digital art.

• Artworks cannot be intended for sale in the foreseeable future.

• A home office that has clients calling and/or staff working there could be able to claim the allowance.

It has been argued that art enhances the work environment - which can generate greater productivity and that there is a causal relationship between businesses displaying artwork and the income of their clients.

THIS INVESTMENT ALLOWANCE WILL APPLY UNTIL 31ST DECEMBER 2009, SO NOW IS THE RIGHT TIME TO ACQUIRE ART FOR A BUSINESS.

The examples below show how it could work utilising the investment allowance for a small business with a turnover less than $2 million.

An Artwork purchased for $6,000 includes GST.

Depreciation $ 60

Investment Allowance $3,000

Equates to a tax deduction of $3,060 dollars

ART- THE FURNISHING YOU CAN APPRECIATE WHILE IT APPRECIATES?

Clients always ask me How do I choose a piece for investment that I can afford? My advice is select established up and coming artists then follow your heart and only buy if you like it. Remember, you are investing in your lifestyle as well. The work is going to enhance your home or office and give you and your family increasing pleasure for many years. History has shown that unlike expensive curtains, blinds and floor coverings, a work of art has the potential to substantially increase in value as you enjoy it and is a long-term investment. Advice before you purchase is an absolute must. We carry out appraisals for our clients and most are astounded at the increase in value their works have achieved over the years.

JOHN VANDER SET BACK: John Vanders health has been improving steadily since he was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy in 2004. Unfortunately this week he has had a serious relapse and he has had to completely slow down and rest. As most of you know the only cure for this disease is a heart transplant and at John’s age the waiting list is long. He has agreed to attend the show as he had paintings set aside. His painting output will be seriously affected and we are all praying for him.

OTTOS 50 years as an artist sure shines through in his latest work, His striking nudes and the country scenes that have made him revered as an artist will all be on display.

BRIDAL REGISTRY: We also operate a unique bridal and gift registry! Why not give or receive a painting from any of our 23 online artists. Help your relatives and friends select a painting that is perfectly suited to your taste with great investment potential.

5 May 06 - SMOKY DAWSON TO PAY TRIBUTE TO PROHART

A picture of PRO HART

PRO HART’S DEATH was the loss of one of our “TOP TEN” members and a great friend. His passing has left a gaping hole in Australian art. Cheryl and I were grateful we visited him and Raylee just before his death. Pro Hart was a giant of a man who never lost touch with the ordinary Aussie. His philosophy of pricing his paintings for the average wage gave many people the opportunity to own one. Sadly with his passing this will change forever. We have been bringing Pro and his art to our clients for almost 30 years and I have extended our condolences to his family on behalf of you all.

TRIBUTE TO PRO: We have invited another lifelong friend of Pro’s, SMOKY DAWSON, to pay tribute to him at this May show where we will have a full showing of Pro’s paintings for sale. I ask all of our friends and clients to attend this tribute as a mark of respect for this great Australian.

‘Pro’s life on earth has been extraordinary and he will be remembered for as long as art thrills the hearts, minds and souls of people everywhere.’

BRUSHMEN OF THE BUSH: Broken Hill City council has declared 2006 the year of ‘The Brushmen of the Bush’ and with Pro Harts’ passing there are only two of this world famous group still painting. That is Jack Absalom and John Pickup and we are excited to say Jack & John’s work will be exhibited for sale with Pro’s at this tribute show. John’s works are keenly sought by discerning investors and can only be described as incredible and exciting. A retrospective exhibition is opening in June this year in the Broken Hill Regional Gallery and will travel extensively through the Australian Regional Gallery circuit after Broken Hill. This is a great boost to the Brushman’s fame and will surely see a further rise in the price of their works. I believe they are the most significant group to capture the Australian art market since the Heidelberg School of Streeton, McCubbin etc. Great potential investment!

ART – THE SAFE BET? Well, this week has certainly proven every thing I have been telling you for the past 26 years and many of you will now be grateful for taking the advice. A Pro Hart sold for $49,000 last Monday at auction. You could have purchased a painting of a similar size from me ten years ago for around $6000 and I don’t think his prices will stop there. Pro was one of my first “TOP TEN” artists. Now is the time to get in early and consider paintings by the remaining “TOP TEN” artists!

HOW I CHOOSE THE TOP TEN: I categorise artist’s works into 10 styles and then, using a wide criteria, choose an artist from each style who I believe is the best artist in that style in Australia today. ‘The proof of the pudding is in the eating’.

KEVIN BEST TO LAUNCH NEW BOOK 29 JUNE 2007

A picture of Kevin Best with his Book

THIS IS AN INVITATION to a very special one-man show and launch of a unique Limited Edition Book of the best paintings that Kevin Best has ever produced. It is also a wonderful investment opportunity to purchase from 30 paintings for sale, at the show, from the book.

AT THE AGE OF 75 Kevin Best has had 33 years of wonderful painting experiences and he invites you to ‘enter his studio’ and join him as he shares with you some of his greatest secrets in ‘Secrets of the Brush’.

THE LAST BOOK This 160 page book of wonderful paintings, stories & painting secrets is a must for every true Australian art lover. Kevin has already bemoaned the fact that he could never see himself having the time and energy to produce another. Our Clients are offered the last opportunity to purchase a painting from one of his books.

OAM I believe one of Kevin’s proudest moments was on Australia Day 2005 when he received the Order of Australia Medal for his services to art and I said at the time Kevin is acknowledged as a major painter of this era and his paintings record our history and our way of life for future generations. Kevin’s investment potential has long been recognised by the art buying public and his peers. The paintings in this book are a timeless reminder of our past and our wonderful Australian heritage.

SMOKY DAWSON. Another collaborator was my old friend Smoky whose wonderful poem ‘Homestead of my Dreams’ is printed and illustrated in 2 paintings gleaned by Kevin from Smoky’s memories with Smoky sharing the brush! Two unique paintings that will live forever in History.

ALL PAINTINGS from the book come fully authenticated with attached valuation and Kevin will be at the show all weekend signing your book purchases and personalising the back of each of these incredible works from the book.

FINALLY: Cheryl & I wholeheartedly recommend this great book ‘Secrets of the Brush’ and hope you can join us to celebrate Kevin’s wonderful achievement of his life’s work. The Pacific International Hotel has offered a great deal for $139 per double per night, which includes hot breakfast with Kevin & Dorn. Phone 97904700
