The Idea of decorating their walls with art by the majority of Australians Pre early 70's was to have three flying plaster- of -Paris ducks arranged up the lounge room wall. The controversial decision by Gough Whitlam to purchase the Jackson pollock 'Blue Poles’ painting in 1973 for $1.3 million had the beneficial effect of generating an awareness among all Australians of art and created a knowledge and pride in Australian art. I believe whether you agreed or not with that purchase at the time, it did more to advance Australian art & artists than any other single event in our history.
Of course that painting has proven to be a great investment. The Artist originally sold the painting in 1955 for $ 6000 it sold again 2years later for $ 32,000 and Australia paid 1.3million in 1973.
What is its value today? Well most experts range it between $80 and $100 million. Of course this has not been tested but I believe it is well in the ballpark.
Australia made a great investment
Clients always ask me 'How do I choose a piece for investment yet one that I can afford?'
My advice is select established up and coming artists then follow your heart and only buy it if you like it. Remember, you are Investing in your lifestyle as well. The work is going to enhance your home or office and give you and your family increasing pleasure for many years. History has shown that unlike expensive curtains, blinds and floor coverings, a work of art has the potential to substantially increase in value as you enjoy.
Advice before you purchase is very important, an absolute must.
We carry out free appraisals for our clients and almost all are astounded at the increase in value their paintings have achieved over the years. Many of them purchased their pieces purely for enjoyment and cannot believe the gains they have made.
